Mardi Gras Fleur de Lis
I painted a Mardi Gras Gnome and now this Fleur De Lis. With MOST Mardi Gras Celebrations being cancelled everywhere because of COVID 19, there are not too many people putting up decorations. But I wanted to make a couple of projects so here is my last one for the year. Keep scrolling for info on how Mom and I made this.
For those of you who are not from Louisiana, (I am originally from Texas, so I had to learn all the Louisiana/Cajun Culture) here is some info on the fleur de lis.
Here is a little info about the Fleur De Lis from Wikipedia:
The fleur-de-lis, also spelled fleur-de-lys (plural: fleurs-de-lis, or fleurs-de-lys)[pron 1] is a stylised lily (in French, fleur means “flower”, and lis means “lily”) that is used as a decorative design or symbol.
The fleur-de-lis has been used in the heraldry of numerous European nations, but is particularly associated with France, notably during its monarchical period. As France is a historically Catholic nation, the fleur-de-lis became “at one and the same time, religious, political, dynastic, artistic, emblematic, and symbolic,” especially in French heraldry.[4] The fleur-de-lis has been used by French royalty and throughout history to represent Catholic saints of France. In particular, the Virgin Mary and St. Joseph are often depicted with a lily.”

Mom and I began this project with a piece of craft board from Lowe’s. We used the same board for our triple hearts and this Fleur de Lis. It is quite thick and heavy. I have a couple of wrought iron Fleur de Lis hanging in my garage. We used one as a template. Then I painted it the three colors of Mardi Gras. It took several coats of all three colors to get the saturation I wanted.
I blended and blended until I had each color blended with the next color. It was just too flat to leave plain purple, plain yellow, and plain green. I was going to paint circles or swirls or polka dots on each color but after blending, I liked it as is.
I couldn’t find any ribbon in Hobby Lobby, so I bought some decor from the Dollar Stores and made a ribbon. Plus I had the purple mesh ribbon. I think it turned out cute.
