Jack Jump Over the Candlestick (Lights of Yesteryear)
What would Christmas be without Candles and Lights. It is hard to believe that before they made electric lights people used candles on their trees. Can you imagine the fire hazards? Maybe that is why they put their trees up on Christmas Eve and then took them down the day after Christmas. Keep reading about this cute little craft idea.
The following excerpt is from History.com https://www.history.com/topics/christmas/history-of-christmas-trees The whole article is a very interesting read.
“It is a widely held belief that Martin Luther, the 16th-century Protestant reformer, first added lighted candles to a tree. Walking toward his home one winter evening, composing a sermon, he was awed by the brilliance of stars twinkling amidst evergreens. To recapture the scene for his family, he erected a tree in the main room and wired its branches with lighted candles.”
Mom made these candlesticks with cut cedar fence slats. The flame and the candle are made as one. Then she attached the base with a screw.
I wanted some candlesticks to go with rustic farmhouse decor. These are my tribute to farmhouse. I used black and white buffalo plaid ribbon at the bottom and raffia at the top.
I also made some with gray and white buffalo check. Many people have their walls painted some shade of gray nowadays. These would go with so many people’s decor. They could also be left out all year round if you wanted. Change the ribbon and voila you have a different season’s decor.
Let me know if you would like me to send you a pattern. But really it’s easy to make.
Thank you for reading my blog about CANDLES at Christmas. There is also a lot of mention of candles in the Bible. Very interesting.
I hope all of you have a wonderful Christmas. I know it’s early for Christmas greetings but the holiday season can be a very depressing time for some and it usually begins around Thanksgiving. This year has been extremely hard for A LOT of people. So everyone has my very best wishes!!
